The goal: To make sure 60 Hudson St becomes a good neighborNeighbors Against N.O.I.S.E. was founded in 1996 by people who live and work in the neighborhood around 60 Hudson Street, an art deco skyscraper in the Tribeca area of lower Manhattan. Built as an office and operations center for Western Union, over the last 10 years 60 Hudson has been converted into a “telecom hotel” where dozens of telecommunications companies maintain their equipment. This equipment cannot be compared to the teletype machines of yore. It includes not only electronics but heavy-duty 24/7 air conditioners and diesel-fueled generators for back-up power. The result: serious fire risk, air pollution, and unhealthy noise levels, the destruction of street life, and the desecration of an architectural landmark.
